Dry Basements are a Good Thing
The health risks and plain agony of a humid basement can be avoided if it’s properly finished in the first place. Our ‘builders grade'(not many others’) basement means we use an exterior wall draining system – installed BEFORE we start building interior walls. The concrete floor slab is poured after we install foundation membrane at the exterior wall / floor intersection. This is placed so that a wall membrane (like tyvec) can be tucked behind it – which would direct any moisture under the slab where it would be sumped away. This system protects the wall (insulation, structure, drywall, wiring, etc) as well as the interior of your home from all the dangers and damage of moisture. The exquisite 😉 hand diagram below shows how it’s done. The photo shows the interior wall frame with the set-up as described behind it.
